the Brady Act
Aired four times in Southern California on Sunday, September 14, 1997 BRADY LAW ---SUN. SEPT. 14THHere are some impressive numbers. Last year under the terms of the Brady Act, 70-thousand gun purchase requests were rejected as a result of background checks. Two-thirds of those rejections involved people either charged with or convicted of a felony. KNX believes the Justice Department statistics are a clear sign that the Brady Law is effective. Background checks have blocked the sale of guns in at least 250-thousand cases, since the law went into effect. That is a significant amount. The National Rifle Association has criticized enforcement of the Brady Law, saying these convicted felons should be arrested as soon as they apply. But we simply do not have enough police officers to stake out every gun store or sporting goods shop. The important aspect is not allowing felons to obtain a gun easily. Sure some will secure weapons from other sources. But we believe lives have been saved because some of those involved in serious crime have been unable to pass a background check and therefore have been unable to buy a gun. KNX says it's time for gun enthusiasts to stand solidly behind a law that does not infringe on their right to bear arms. This law simply reviews how individuals have handled responsibility, before we allow them to handle a firearm. |
| The Brady Act is Another Example Of
How
Gun Control Increases Violent Crime
KNX Editorial Reply by Former El Segundo City Councilmember Aired four times in Southern California on KNX AM 1070 on September 24, 1997 A recent KNX editorial found the Brady Act numbers impressive. A more competent review and analysis of the facts exposes the Brady Act as yet another example of how Gun Control Increases Violent Crime, by wasting criminal justice resources, and by destroying the crime control and deterrent value of armed citizens. The Brady Act cost tax payers 200 Million Dollars in its first three years, but resulted in only three criminals being sent to prison, according to a U.S. Government Accounting Office Report. If you do not arrest criminals who attempt to purchase firearms, then it should be obvious that you are not stopping them, but simply delaying them for an hour or so. Ninety-three percent of criminals who mis-use firearms obtain them through illegal sources, in violation of existing gun control laws including the Brady Act. The remaining seven percent can easily do the same. That same 200 Million Dollars could have funded more than one thousand additional police officers, or could have prevented the early release of more than one thousand, six hundred already convicted and imprisoned dangerous felons each year. During and after the Los Angeles riots, thousands of law-abiding citizens found out how waiting periods violated their rights, and endangered their lives and their loved ones. Any responsible person would oppose gun control laws which target law-abiding citizens, because the scientific research shows that gun control never reduces crime, but often, gun control increases violent crime, costing thousands of lives every year. There are many superior alternatives. Instant background checks resulted in many more convictions. And right to self-defense laws that guarantee the right to carry a concealed handgun to adults who pass the background check, have reduced crime in 31 states. ### 90 SECONDS ### Michael D.
